Vitoria

Chief town of Alava, Vitoria lies on the inland slopes of the Cantabrian Mountains, 1725 feet above sea level. The older part, on a hill, consists of concentric rings of streets and buildings, while the newer sector spreads southward along broad straight roads. A road and rail junction, it owes its historical and economic importance to its favorable position. Probably Visigothic in origin, the city took its present name under Sancho VI (the Wise) of Navarre, who conquered it in 1181.
