Palma

Palma Capital of the Balearic Islands, Palma nestles deep in a broad bay on the south coast of Majorca, and thanks to its natural beauty, climate and many hotels, has become an international tourist resort. Since the 13th century it has been the principal economic and administrative center of the archipelago.

Palma was founded by the Romans. The old city, however, is Moorish in character, and is dominated by the cathedral, which can be seen from ships approaching the coast. Its artistic heritage makes the city one of the foremost in Spain.

It has a prosperous port, linked to Barcelona, Alicante and Valencia. Its airport (San Bonet) is on important regular lines and seasonal routes.
