Costa Brava

Costa BravaNotoriously heavily developed, at its worst the Costa Brava delivers all that its image suggests: overcrowded hotels, miles of scratchy grey sand, bars awash with watery lager and more English breakfasts than you could eat in a lifetime. But there's far more to it than this, and this 130 km stretch of coast offers a varied range of sea and sand holidays, from the mass commercialism of Lloret de Mar to the smaller, more elegant resort of Cadaques. Despite the tourist development there remain some intensely pretty stretches of coast, especially towards the north, with rocky, pine clad hills tumbling to sandy coves of exquisite blue water. No matter where you choose to stay on the Costa Brava, there are a couple of places of interest inland you really should try and see: the wacky Salvador Dali museum at Figueres, and the quiet, historic town of Gerona.
