Bilbao

BilbaoGrimy, damp and industrial, Bilbao is all that its reputation declares it to be: you'll either love it or hate it. First and foremost a working city, it enjoys a culture deeply rooted in a tradition whose clearest expression is in the Basque language and the cuisine, arguably the best in Spain. It's a place with guts, where strong flavours satisfy strong tastes, and the best way to get a feel for all this is by wandering its streets and sampling the rich life of its bars and restaurants. Bilbaoans work hard and play hard: bars and clubs heave with people, the tapas here is as good as you'll find anywhere in Spain, and amid the hectic grind of the city glimmers a sprinkling of Art Nouveau cafe bars with superb period detail.

Physically, too, Bilbao's robust character is unique: the place has a gritty, heavy beauty. Bold 19th century buildings line broad avenues, their weighty monumentality punctuated by the loaded curves and ponderous swirls of occasional

Bilbao Art Nouveau facades. Similarly unexpected colourful. flashes of turn of the century stained glass found in such workaday settings as the train stations and the market, echoing the dazzle of Tiffany's more famous and costly brilliance, here celebrating the ordinary life of the city.

Bilbao is surrounded by steep, strangely peaked mountains.' Walk down the most central of streets, turn a corner and they swing into view. The city sits on a pinch of land between taut, sinuous curves of the river Nervi6n, which drags in its wake a trail of salty air so that you can taste the Atlantic on your lips. The coast is less than 15 kin away and splendid beaches are easily accessible.
