Badajoz

Badajoz The city stands on the left bank of the Guadiana River, in a strategic position which dominates the whole valley. It was the capital of the Moorish Aftaside dynasty from 1009 to 1094, falling to succeeding dynasties until 1229, when it was recaptured by Christian armies. Today Badajoz is a commercial center of considerable importance, and lies on an important railroad near the border of Portugal. A few monuments of its historical past are still standing, including the cathedral, the walls encircling the town, and a Moorish castle.
